Bill Ngabo’s story…

The Foundation has already begun its work in Africa. We are supporting an extremely promising Kenyan medical student, Bill Ngabo, through a five-year medical degree. Bill’s story is an extraordinary one. In 2001 Bill had passed his secondary certificate of education and earned himself a place at the University of Nairobi for a degree course leading to a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

Bill had the ambition of becoming a doctor from the age of six and was nicknamed Dr Bill Robert by his school friends. He had hoped to obtain a scholarship for the course, but his grades suffered due to his class attendance being disrupted by his father’s inability to pay fees on time. His father had been out of work due to ill health. This remarkable young man managed to juggle his studies with caring for a family and still obtain exemplary marks. Bill took the initiative to write to Baroness Chalker to request financial assistance.

The decision was taken, on receipt of references, to sponsor Bill Ngabo’s course of study. We have been monitoring his progress ever since and he is now in his final year of medical school. He has a remarkable dedication and commitment to his profession and he will no doubt make a lasting contribution to society when he qualifies. Bill’s story is an example of the contribution that we can make. The cost of his sponsorship, £3,500 per year, is a small price to pay for the immeasurable change he will bring to his community. Bill’s success has made us realise that our vision is achievable and that we can make a real difference.
